Uric acid study

Dear Bulldog owner/enthusiast,

We are researchers at the University of California - Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine. Our laboratory is interested in understanding the molecular basis of inherited diseases in dogs and horses. One of the projects is identifying the mutation that causes uric acid stones in Dalmatians dogs and we believe we are close to such a discovery. Since Bulldogs also suffer from uric acid stones, we would like to screen them to check if they carry the same mutation. If indeed this mutation proves to be the source for uric acid stones in the Bulldog, it would enable us in the future to provide genetic testing for early diagnosis and preventative breeding. All we ask of you is to send us a DNA sample of your dog and a brief medical history. We are looking for DNA from healthy dogs. The DNA can be obtained in two forms either via a blood sample taken by your vet or by a non invasive procedure using a simple swabbing of the inner cheek of your dog. To contact us to obtain the mailing instructions and the swab, please email Nili Karmi at:
Sincerely,
Danika Bannasch DVM, Ph.D.
